Description:
This classic Cuban-style “Bistec Uruguayo” consists of two thin pork steaks, breaded and fried to a crispy golden brown, stuffed with layers of sliced ham and melted cheese. The result is a juicy, flavorful cutlet with a gooey cheese center and savory ham, offering both crunch and tenderness in every bite.

Ingredients:

  • Two thin pork steaks per portion

  • Thin slices of ham

  • Thin slices of cheese (like Swiss or Gouda)

  • Egg wash, flour, and breadcrumbs for coating

  • Garlic and citrus marinade (lemon or bitter orange)

  • Seasonings: salt, pepper, optional oregano and cumin

  • Vegetable oil for frying

Preparation:

  1. Pound the steaks gently to flatten and tenderize. Marinate with garlic, citrus juice, salt, and pepper for approximately 20 minutes.

  2. Layer one steak with ham and cheese, then top it with the second steak. Secure with toothpicks if needed.

  3. Dredge the stuffed steak sequentially in flour, whisked egg, and breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure proper adhesion.

  4. Fry in hot oil until both sides are golden and crispy, about 8–10 minutes. Drain excess oil.

  5. Let rest briefly and remove toothpicks before serving.

Serving Suggestions:
Serve hot and sliced vertically to reveal the melted cheese center. Best enjoyed alone or with sides like white rice, fries, or salad.
